In the world of professional wrestling, creative control is a delicate balance between artistic vision and the demands of a global audience. For former WWE star Sidney Akeem, this balance was shattered, leading to a creative process that ultimately ruined his masked gimmick. The story of Akeem's SCRYPTS character in NXT is a cautionary tale about the challenges of bringing a wrestler's vision to life in a highly controlled environment.
Akeem, who is now known as Soleil, recently opened up about his experience during an appearance on the Rewind Recap Relive podcast. He revealed that his original pitch for the SCRYPTS character involved a mask gimmick, where Rey Mysterio would bestow upon him a mask before a six-man tag match, giving him newfound confidence for a big win. This storyline was meant to explore the animosity between Dominik Mysterio and his father, Rey, potentially leading to a dramatic turn in the narrative.
However, the creative team had other ideas. When Akeem presented his vision to NXT's head writer, he was asked about his interests outside of wrestling. He mentioned his passion for slam poetry, which led to the character's dark poet direction. Akeem, a team player, went along with the creative's vision, but the final product fell short of his original concept.
"Too many chefs in the kitchen," Akeem said. "I went to NXT and told them the idea with the mask, and then their head writer said, 'What else do you do for fun?' I said, 'I do slam poetry.' He's like, 'Oh, I had this idea of this dark poet.' Me, I'm a team player. Then they came up with this idea of you'll do this and do that. On TV, I wasn't ready because the mask was horrible, the gear was horrible, and the gimmick was horrible. What you saw was not Scrypts, you saw Blink Man."
Akeem's frustration stems from the fact that the SCRYPTS character he envisioned was not the one that aired on NXT television. He felt that the creative team's interference diluted the essence of his original idea. However, he found solace in his current Soleil character, which represents everything SCRYPTS was supposed to be.
"Soleil was everything that Scrypts were supposed to be back in NXT," Akeem explained. "This time I have the creative freedom to do it the way I want to do it, the way that I envisioned it." The name Soleil, French for sun, pays homage to his nearly two decades with Cirque du Soleil, and the character of The Black Sun has a comic book backstory that adds depth to his persona.
Akeem's story raises important questions about the creative process in professional wrestling. It highlights the challenges of bringing a wrestler's vision to life in a highly controlled environment, where the balance between artistic freedom and the demands of a global audience can be a delicate one. In my opinion, Akeem's experience serves as a reminder that the creative process in professional wrestling is a complex and often frustrating endeavor, where the line between success and failure can be thin.
What makes this story particularly fascinating is the insight it provides into the creative process in professional wrestling. It raises a deeper question about the role of the wrestler in shaping their character and the challenges they face when their vision is not fully realized. From my perspective, Akeem's experience serves as a cautionary tale for wrestlers who seek to bring their unique vision to life in a highly controlled environment. It is a reminder that the creative process is a delicate balance, and that the line between success and failure can be thin.
